Entering the season, all players will be able to earn a new Rank Medal on their profile that represents their highest performance level for the current season. Initial calibration games will be seeded roughly based on your previous skill. There are seven levels of Rank Medals, and within each level are five stars of progress to earn towards the next Medal. Your performance in both Party and Solo games is considered when evaluating your skill and determining when your Medal gets upgraded, with Solo games having a bigger impact. In order for players to achieve either the Ancient or Divine Medals, only Solo-game performance is considered. This update also expands the Leaderboard system to include many more players. Team Matchmaking Added to Dota 2
Nkhara Fri 20th Dec – 5: Even though everyone has a MMR and that is how Dota knows who to match you up against in your match making games, you were not allowed to see it through the Dota 2 client. Instead players were forced to use sites like Dotabuff or Mydotaskill to figure out what percentile of players you were in. With the recent implementation of Ranked Match Making, you can now see your friends Ranked MMR and so get an idea of what skill level they are in.
However, what does this mean? Some would argue that this is detrimental to the game and will create elitists as if we had none before and some would argue that this is good because finally the competitive players can actually keep track of their exact ranking in the world.
Dota 2 will require players to link a phone number to their accounts to participate in ranked matches, to curb the creation of multiple accounts by a single user. Whatever the case, multiple accounts “create a negative matchmaking experience at all skill brackets,” Valve said in a blog post announcing the change. It takes effect May 4. Valve acknowledged that a linked phone number will not eliminate multiple accounts for a single user entirely.
Unranked play has no such requirement to link a phone. However, “Having more players using their primary accounts will have a positive effect on both Ranked and Unranked Matchmaking,” Valve says. Dota 2 accounts that already have phone numbers linked will still need an extra confirmation step before playing ranked matches after May 4. Phone numbers may be changed but that number will be ineligible for use for three months before it can be registered on a new account.
And yes, phone numbers provided by online services, such as Google Talk, won’t be allowed. There are other changes introduced with this patch too.

Apr 21, 3: Starting next month, Dota 2 players will need to have a unique, valid phone number associated with their account to take part in the game’s ranked matchmaking pool. Unranked play will be unaffected by the change. Valve says that “online services that provide phone numbers are not allowed,” so potential workarounds to create a new “valid” number shouldn’t work.
In North America, data from the FCC-backed NANPA can help determine the source of any such online phone numbers, but it’s unclear whether Valve will also be able to confirm international numbers in a similar way. In any case, going to the trouble of creating a fake new phone number is a bit more involved than simply creating a free new Dota 2 account in order to wreck some noobs.

Juni um 9: One of the reasons it is good to let people know where they stand is so that childish quarrels see above about what a good MMR is can be avoided. All Dota players should be allowed to locate their position in the communities they compete in.
Now what I have a problem with is your mmr being visible only to your friends, I understand this is to prevent trolling etc and I do understand vavles core focus is on curbing toxic behaviour within the community however with just a number how are we to know how skilled of a player we truly are and where we stand compared to other players. I am hoping they release some sort of chart indicating the percentiles or something so that we can get a sense of where we are at and where we need to be.
Also I think it may be a good idea to implement visible rankings to guildmates or have like an opt in guild ladder where you can choose to show your stats to your guildmates. I rember at one point they had a page on the community tab where they displayed the person who played a hero really well for the week or something like that, things like these should be brought back.
Maybe a global ranking where players names are hidden and just mmr is shown perhaps? We really need a way to compare or truly measure our progress that won’t lead to toxic behaviour. What do you guys think?
